How We Test
Our testing is built around how people actually listen. Every soundbar is evaluated inside four real‑room profiles—Apartment Night, Family Room, Gaming Den, and Projector Loft—so our results reflect couch‑level reality, not just lab theory.
Rooms, setups, and content
- Apartment Night: Close seating, shared walls, low volumes, night‑mode reliance
- Family Room: Wider seating, open spaces, dialogue audibility with moderate noise
- Gaming Den: Console/PC with priority on latency, chat balance, and directional cues
- Projector Loft: Longer HDMI runs, ARC/eARC extractors, lip‑sync risk mitigation
We test with varied content: dialogue‑heavy shows, dynamic films, sports, and calibrated gaming scenarios. For Atmos/DTS evaluation, we confirm app and device support, then assess height virtualization and surround coherence from typical seating distances.
Measurements and tools
- Dialogue Clarity at Low Volume: Speech‑intelligibility checks using reference clips and calibrated SPL targets, assessing clarity without raising overall loudness
- Gaming Latency: End‑to‑end lag checks (pass‑through + audio path) using high‑speed capture and standardized test scenes
- Night‑Mode Effectiveness: Dynamic‑range reduction and dialogue boost performance at apartment‑safe SPLs; checks for compression artifacts
- Bass Containment: Low‑frequency spill measured at adjacent boundary points to assess neighbor impact; presets documented for quiet hours
- HDMI/eARC Reliability: Handshake stability across power cycles, input switching, and app changes; CEC behavior and one‑remote control consistency
- Wireless & Casting: Wi‑Fi/Bluetooth stability, AirPlay/Chromecast/Spotify Connect reliability, and multi‑room quirks
Scoring and transparency
We publish scored categories—Dialogue Clarity, Gaming Latency, Night‑Mode, Bass Containment, HDMI/eARC Reliability—plus context notes that explain trade‑offs. Scores reflect the default experience after following our setup playbook.
Setup playbooks and calibration
Every review includes a simple playbook: correct HDMI port usage (ARC/eARC), placement diagrams, room‑size presets, sub level and crossover guidance, auto‑cal tips, and CEC best practices. We provide fallback paths for optical and projector setups, including tested ARC extractors and switchers with lip‑sync guidance.
Firmware, updates, and longevity
We log firmware versions at test time, re‑check key issues when updates drop, and revise scores if performance materially changes. Long‑term notes track surround add‑on compatibility, battery/charge quirks for wireless rears, and warranty/return experiences.
Repeatability matters. Our methods are documented so you can replicate key steps at home, and our recommendations state assumptions (room size, seating distance, TV ports) to keep guidance honest and predictable.
